Banjos, much like members of the human species, evolved in Africa and have necks. Also like some very rare and talented humans, they show up in bands of several different exciting varieties. The instrument has developed an unsavory reputation, best descriped as somewhere between a jaw harp and the spoons. Despite its involvement in several currently popular bands the instrument remains dismissed by most modern genres, sub-genres, sub-sub-genres, and spin-off or gimmick genres.

“Bluegrass without the five string is like jumping rope with one arm.” 1

Rock and Roll, like the banjo, has its roots deeply thrust in the south. The Blues that spawned Rock came from the same gospel music that was accompanied by the banjo. Despite the caterwauling ridiculousness of some modern record-producing groups they have the same ancestors as the noble banjo.

Minneapolis group “A Night in the Box” started their careers playing for loose change in a shopping mall. They’re now releasing their second album. They combine a rough, White-Stripes-esque rock spine with a body of bluegrass. One of my favorite bands, and one I’ve never heard on the radio.
